Primary Objective:  In broad terms, briefly state the major purpose of primary objective of this position.

Oversees the operation of the air graders, forming station, forming line, and press from a computerized workstation.  Makes process changes to maximize production while maintaining quality standards.

Major Function and Scope: Using brief narrative statements, describe each major function of responsibility explaining the scope of the function as appropriate.

Daily Operations

  • Meet with previous Press operator to discuss current and previous issues from their shift.
  • Monitors the continuous production of product through the air graders, forming line and press from computer work station.
  • Monitors incoming and outgoing process parameters to include bulk density, moisture content, mat temperature, density, vertical density profile, and internal bond.
  • Adjust the process variables of pressing time, temperature, and pressure to obtain the optimal chemical reaction to maximize core performance while minimizing component cost while maintaining plant and customer specifications.
  • Based upon laboratory data adjust system operating parameters as required to keep all production within specification.
  • Minimize creation of off quality and rejects by making real time adjustments to established production recipes by reacting to changing process variables.
  • Identifies process variation, determines the source, and works to eliminate it.
  • Performs root cause analysis on problems and assist with implementing solutions.
  • Ability to multitask; monitor several computer screens, communicate by phone or radio with effected employees and address issues all within a certain event.
  • Ability to communicate and work closely with outsourced technicians on projects.
  • Knowledge of the Flamex and Simplex system for the facility.
  • Monitor tracking of steel belt and rolling rod tracking.
  • Ability to calibrate forming, dosing and weigh bin scales.
  • Ability to calibrate Dieffensor and Grecon systems and send satellite request when assistance is needed.
  • Need to know the working process of the outfeed system; diagonal saws, star coolers, trim saws and stackers.
  • Monitor the release agent dosing and set points on the steel belt sprayers.
  • Understand how and when to adjust the equalizing roller and scalper.
  • Record data from the outfeed, downtime out of production and reject classifications.
  •  Understand the technique of properly managing heat versus moisture to maintain speed and quality during the process.
  • Be able to make adjustments to obtain A-grade board when receiving feedback that board has fallen below specifications.
  • Understanding and ability to read charts, measurements and explaining steps taken on the process.
  • Maintain storage files of emails, dimension and sample check sheets and storage cabinet.
  • Communicates with other control room operators to maintain stable and consistent production. 
  • Depending on the changeover types this should be done in a timely manner with the assistants, outfeed operator, QC tech and whomever else is involved.
  • Assists in planning and executing production line shutdowns to minimize downtime while maximizing efficiency.
  • Monitors raw board quality and takes immediate action to eliminate problems negatively impacting it.
  • Directs press housekeeping activities during scheduled maintenance days and during production.
  • Assists maintenance personnel in performing technical work.
  • Safely work around the press and forming area and the leadership qualities to direct the assistants, helpers and contractors to safely accomplish the designated tasks.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workstation because of numerous reports needed for review.
  • Ability to handle simultaneous events in real time with time restraints.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

Shutdown Operations

  • Adjust press speed and temps as needed to maintain quality and bring press temps down to lower shutdown set points.
  • Lay out equipment needed for press repairs by contractors.
  • Inspect and stage belt for proper location to perform repairs.
  • Assist contractor with steel belt repair and have good understanding or the repair process to maximize repair during allotted time.
  • Performs basic preventative maintenance inspections during shutdown.
  • Ability to oversee LOTO and verifying “0” energy on machinery to be worked on or cleaned.
  • Occasionally enters confine space to perform inspections during scheduled maintenance days.
  • Complete specific inspections in forming and clean as needed when discrepancies are found.
  • Attend any job-related training deemed necessary by supervision
  • Follow all established standard operating procedures
  • Perform general housekeeping duties as necessary
  • Perform other tasks assigned by management

 

Type of Experience and Knowledge:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Requires 2 or more years of experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Position requires individual to climb multiple flights of stairs and ladders daily
  • Must be capable of working in tight quarters and in hot spaces, and ability to pass a respirator fit test.
  • Must be capable of lifting and carrying 50 lbs. for a short distance.
  • Must be capable of standing/walking for a 12 hour shift with minimal breaks.
  • Must be able to withstand working in heat up to 110 degrees for extended periods of time.
  • Must be capable of working on elevated surfaces without fear of heights.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly on 2 way radio.
  • Must be able to pass a respirator fit test, and wear and work with a full face respirator.
