Primary Objective:  In broad terms, briefly state the major purpose of primary objective of this position.

Sets up and operates extrusion fill lines and warp lines in accordance with standard operating procedures. On the Fill Lines, the Doffer will doff fill yarn packages, weigh yarn, and use computer to make inventory tickets.  On the Warp Lines, the Doffer will doff tricot sized spools of yarn, use powered industrial truck to transport tricots and use computer to make inventory tickets. Other duties include patrolling the lines watching for quality concerns, assisting in starting the lines, watching the cans for yarn wraps, cleaning the work area, and operating a power industrial truck.  Will perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Major Function and Scope: Using brief narrative statements, describe each major function of responsibility explaining the scope of the function as appropriate.

  1. Assist in setting up and starting the line.
  2. Observes operation of machine and equipment to ensure continuous and appropriate flow of extruded yarn.
  3. Visually examines extruded products.
  4. Make inventory ticket and place on tricot or fill yarn truck.
  5. Patrol lines, checking for quality problems.
  6. Operate powered industrial equipment.
    1. Change propane tank on powered industrial equipment, when needed.
    2. Before using powered industrial truck complete “Pre Shift Industrial Truck Inspections”, turn checklist in to supervisor office.
  7. Do not attempt to unstop cages on choppers. Do not use a tow motor on the cage in any way.  When the chopper or cage becomes clogged, call maintenance.
  8. Fill Line Doffer
    1. Doffs line by removing partial/full packages, placing on peg truck or in box, replacing empty tubes and performing tie in procedures.
    2. Weigh yarn/waste.
    3. Transport fill yarn/waste to appropriate storage area.
    4. Blow back waste.
    5. Set boxes of raw material at blender using powered industrial truck
    6. Wear cut resistant glove on one hand when changing utility knife blade.
    7. Assist Material Coordinators with staging fill yarn at looms, as requested by the shift supervisor.
  9. Warp Line Doffer
    1. Doffs tricot beam from line and replaces with empty tricot beam.
    2. Transport tricots to appropriate storage area using powered industrial trucks.
    3. Remove waste from tricot beam by cutting yarn from beam or using unwinder machine. Wears additional PPE when cutting yarn from beams.
    4. Wear required safety gloves for the task at hand.
      1. Wear cut resistant glove on one hand when changing utility knife blade.
      2. Wear welding gloves when rolling tricots.
    5. Check for burrs on tricots with silver/burr checking device.
    6. Use UHMW stick to smooth and straighten ends while tricot is running. Do not touch moving ends with hands
  10. General Duties
    1. Empty trash dumpster.
    2. Participate in Safety programs and Neighborhood Watch.
    3. Works safely and orderly.
    4. Notify supervision of any hazardous or unsafe conditions.
    5. Maintains clean and orderly work area and blows back waste
    6. Perform all necessary miscellaneous work pertaining to the above job duties.
    7. Any other duties assigned by management.                        

Type of Experience and Knowledge:

Knowledge, Experience, Competencies and Supervision: Describe the education, knowledge required, years of experience, specific skills and abilities required to do the job on a fully competent basis.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE PREREQUISITES:

Mandatory – Must be able to read and write in manner indicated on job application.

Preferred –  Previous experience operating a powered industrial truck in a production environment. Basic computer skills to enter data into computer system.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to work assigned schedule. Must have ability to obtain a powered industrial equipment license.  Ability to learn job specific computer skills. Ability to perform mathematical calculations such as addition and subtraction. Ability to visually recognize quality problems. Ability to learn extrusion process, fill line and warp line procedures, doff packages and tricots, and thread winders.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Reports to shift supervisor/department manager, but works with minimum amount of supervision.

DIRECTION EXERCISED:

Limited to personal activities required to perform duties of job.

  • Basic computer knowledge to enter data. 
  • Ability to perform detailed work with yarn, including placing ends in the correct dents on a comb.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Frequency – Amount – Description)

STANDING / WALKING:

Ability to stand and walk continuously during a twelve (12) hour shift.

SITTING:

Ability to sit on seat of powered industrial truck for a short period of time.

MOVING SELF:

Ability to move about extrusion area continuously during a twelve (12) hour shift.

CLIMBING:

Ability to climb stairs to overhead platform and to QA Lab.   Ability to climb onto catwalk to draw yarn through the comb. Ability to climb onto and off powered industrial truck.

MOVING (MATERIALS): (Lifting – carrying – pushing – pulling)

Pushing/pulling – Ability to push a variety of tools and operate control levers.  Ability to push an empty/full fill yarn truck containing up to 46 partial/full fill yarn packages.  Push one fill yarn truck at a time.  Do not at any time pull fill yarn truck or any other (movable type) equipment.  Ability to push/roll an empty/full tricot. Get help when needed. 

Lifting/carrying –  Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds without mechanical assistance.  Get help when needed.

HEARING / SPEAKING:

Must be able to communicate with co-workers and management as needed to perform job.

REACHING:

Vertical – Ability to reach to full arm extension to perform job duties.

Horizontal – Ability to reach to full arm extension to perform job duties.

VISUAL ACUITY:

Must have adequate normal, color vision and depth perception to perform job duties.  Ability to utilize both near and far vision while performing job duties.  Ability to recognize defects. Ability to draw yarn through a fine comb, placing yarn in the correct dent.

BENDING / STOOPING:

Ability to bend, stoop, squat or kneel throughout a twelve (12) hour shift. 

MENTAL ABILITIES:

Ability to make decisions regarding work priorities.  Ability to read and understand computer screen charts.  Ability to enter data in computer system.  Ability to obtain powered industrial truck license.

OTHER:

Fingering – Ability to demonstrate good tactile discrimination and functional sensations.

Medium motor manipulation – N/A

Fine motor coordination – Ability to use fine motor coordination while entering information into computer.  Ability to push and turn buttons throughout a twelve (12) hour shift. Ability to draw yarn through a comb.

Grip – Ability to utilize both a one handed and two-handed grip.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

Must wear hearing protection, safety shoes and safety glasses with permanent side shields when in the warehouse and production areas.  Must adhere to plant clothing and footwear policy.  Wear additional personal protective equipment as required by task at hand.

Extruder, computer, printer, pen/pencil, bucket, scissors, pouch, cutter bar, scrapper bar, tubes, peg truck, box, pyrometer, utility knife, utility knife blades, brass putty knife, mop, mop bucket broom, gloves, face shield, rubber apron, tricot beam, reed hook, buggy, lease stick, lease cord, baler, sliver/burr checking device, UHMW stick, tricot truck and powered industrial truck.

MATERIALS USED:

Polypropylene, chalk, concentrate, printer tickets, ribbon, pen/pencil and lubricant.
