What we need:

 

Mohawk is seeking a Tax Accountant – Sales Tax to make a substantial contribution to all Mohawk North America brands, spanning residential, distributor, and builder multifamily divisions.

 

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring tax compliance. You will assist in the preparation of state and local sales and use tax reports, ensuring the company's adherence to tax payment schedules, information reporting, and other regulatory requirements. Additionally, you will provide valuable insights on the tax implications of our business activities and contribute to strategies aimed at reducing tax liability.

 

What you’ll do:

 

  • Under the guidance of leadership, take the lead in Sales Tax Compliance and Reporting, leveraging Vertex Tax Software, and preparing multiple state, local, and Canada VAT returns.
  • Review use tax purchases for accuracy and utilize Vertex for adjustments to vendor and General Ledger.
  • Prepare journal entries to post-tax payments from financial institutions to the General Ledger.
  • Reconcile sales and use tax collections for all Mohawk entities between Vertex and General Ledger.
  • Import sales and use tax data into the Vertex Returns Module for all Mohawk entities.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of tax settings/mappings in the Vertex system and reporting.
  • Generate and analyze tax reports for sample use tax through remittance.
  • Review tax notices, submit refund requests, and engage with states to achieve resolution.
  • Fulfill month-end close responsibilities to meet critical deadlines.
  • Prepare and input journal entries into SAP.
  • Reconcile General Ledger accounts.
  • Provide support to team members and perform other duties as assigned.

 

What you have:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (0-2 years of experience)
  • Understanding of Sales Tax compliance regulations and reporting
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Office and spreadsheet applications (MS Word, Excel, Access, etc.).

 

What you’re good at:

 

  • Proficiency in applying general knowledge in the absence of explicit guidelines for departmental procedures, practices, and standards.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Competence in conducting tax research using tax research systems on the internet, such as CCH IntelliConnect, RIA Checkpoint, and BNA Tax Portfolio.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels in the organization, write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals, and effectively present information to various stakeholders.
  • Strong numerical aptitude, including the ability to calculate figures, amounts, percentages, and interpret data.
  • Capability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, as well as interpret a variety of information presented in written, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work with limited latitude for independent action and judgment within the framework of the job, verifying work in the context of recommendations for action to the department manager.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across various company departments.
