Primary Objective:  In broad terms, briefly state the major purpose of primary objective of this position. 

The primary objective of the Lab Coordinator is to support research and development, laboratory testing, formulation development, quality control, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement activities through the application of chemistry knowledge and laboratory skills. 

The position performs laboratory experiments and testing, assists with the development and optimization of new formulations and materials, evaluates raw materials and finished products, and supports technical investigations and new innovations. 

The Lab Coordinator will work on multiple projects and priorities simultaneously and collaborate closely with R&D, QC, Production, Operations, Engineering, and other relevant departments. 

The position is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, organized, and efficient laboratory environment; ensuring accurate laboratory documentation and records; and following established laboratory, chemical handling, safety, and quality procedures. 

 

 

Major Function and Scope: Using brief narrative statements, describe each major function of responsibility explaining the scope of the function as appropriate. 

 

Perform laboratory experiments and testing to support research and development, formulation development, troubleshooting, quality control, and continuous improvement. 

Support the development, evaluation, and optimization of new formulations, materials, and products. 

Assist with research and development activities involving new materials, raw materials, formulations, and processes. 

Precisely and accurately weigh, measure, blend, and mix chemicals, raw materials, and formulations according to established procedures and formulations. 

Prepare laboratory samples, mixtures, solutions, test specimens, and other materials required for laboratory testing and evaluation. 

Perform chemical and physical testing using laboratory equipment and established test methods. 

Assist with testing and laboratory activities in the Quality Control (QC) laboratory as needed. 

Support investigations of raw material, formulation, product, and process issues through laboratory testing, observations, measurements, and data analysis. 

Operate laboratory equipment and instruments safely and according to established operating procedures. 

Learn and apply appropriate laboratory procedures, analytical methods, test methods, and work instructions. 

Assist with the development, improvement, and validation of laboratory test methods and procedures when required. 

Accurately record, organize, analyze, and communicate laboratory data and test results. 

Maintain accurate records of formulations, laboratory testing, raw materials, test results, equipment settings, observations, and other technical information. 

Support research and development projects by conducting experiments, collecting data, evaluating results, and communicating findings to the appropriate personnel. 

Assist with troubleshooting and root-cause investigations related to materials, formulations, products, and manufacturing processes. 

Work closely with R&D, QC, Production, Operations, Engineering, and other departments to support technical projects and resolve laboratory or product-related issues. 

Review Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and follow all applicable requirements for the safe handling, storage, labeling, transportation, and disposal of chemicals and raw materials. 

Maintain knowledge of chemical hazards, required PPE, emergency procedures, chemical storage requirements, and applicable laboratory safety practices. 

Always utilize the correct PPE and follow established safety guidelines and procedures for the task at hand. 

Maintain accurate and organized technical documentation, including laboratory procedures, test methods, specifications, formulations, SDS information, and test results. 

Closely follow established laboratory procedures, guidelines, work instructions, quality requirements, and safety procedures. 

Assist with updating and maintaining laboratory procedures, work instructions, test methods, and other technical documentation when requested by the supervisor. 

Organize and maintain raw material, chemical, sample, and laboratory supply inventories using 5S methodology and established inventory procedures. 

Monitor laboratory materials and supplies and communicate replenishment needs to the appropriate personnel. 

Maintain laboratory equipment, tools, and instruments in good working order. 

Organize and coordinate maintenance, calibration, and service activities for laboratory equipment and instruments. 

Maintain a clean, organized, efficient, and safe laboratory and work environment. 

Ensure laboratory work areas, equipment, glassware, chemicals, samples, and materials are properly organized and maintained. 

Manage multiple projects, experiments, and assignments simultaneously, prioritizing activities according to project requirements and deadlines. 

Identify opportunities to improve laboratory organization, testing methods, formulations, processes, safety, efficiency, and overall laboratory operations. 

Communicate laboratory findings, observations, results, and project status clearly and accurately to relevant personnel. 

Follow all company policies, procedures, environmental requirements, quality requirements, and health and safety practices. 

Performs other duties as assigned by supervision. 

Type of Experience and Knowledge: 

Knowledge, Experience, Certifications: Describe the education, knowledge required, years of experience, specific skills and abilities required to do the job on a fully competent basis. 

Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a closely related chemistry discipline. 

Previous professional work experience is not required; recent graduates are encouraged to apply. 

Strong understanding of fundamental chemistry principles. 

Understanding of laboratory practices, chemical handling, measurements, calculations, and experimental procedures. 

Laboratory experience obtained through academic coursework, internships, research, or previous laboratory work is preferred. 

Experience with laboratory testing, formulation, sample preparation, chemical analysis, or material evaluation is helpful but not required. 

Knowledge of formulation principles, polymers, coatings, inks, PVC, additives, or related materials is helpful. 

Ability to accurately weigh, measure, prepare, mix, and handle chemical materials. 

Ability to understand and follow laboratory procedures, test methods, specifications, and written instructions. 

Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and apply appropriate chemical handling and safety requirements. 

Knowledge of laboratory safety, chemical hygiene, PPE requirements, chemical storage, labeling, and chemical waste handling. 

Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate laboratory testing, measurements, calculations, and documentation. 

Basic mathematical skills, including multiplication, division, percentages, unit conversions, and laboratory calculations.
