Boiler Technician

 

Job Summary

The Industrial Plant Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of boiler systems and related utility equipment within an industrial manufacturing facility. This position monitors, maintains, and adjusts boilers, steam distribution systems, water treatment systems, and auxiliary equipment to ensure continuous plant operations while complying with safety, environmental, and operational standards.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor industrial boilers, steam generation systems, and associated equipment.
  • Perform routine inspections of boilers, pumps, valves, compressors, water treatment systems, and other utility equipment.
  • Monitor operating parameters including pressure, temperature, water levels, fuel consumption, and steam output.
  • Start up, shut down, and adjust boiler equipment as required to meet plant production demands.
  • Conduct water testing and chemical treatment procedures to maintain proper boiler water quality.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues and take corrective action to minimize downtime.
  • Respond to emergencies involving boiler and utility systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities and assist maintenance personnel during repairs and shutdowns.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs, inspection records, and regulatory documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, environmental regulations, and company safety procedures.
  • Participate in safety programs, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Report equipment deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards in boiler rooms and utility areas.

 

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Industrial boiler operator license or certification preferred where required by state or local regulations.
  • Experience operating high-pressure boiler systems in a manufacturing, industrial, or utility environment.
  • Knowledge of steam systems, water treatment, pumps, valves, and process controls.
  • Understanding of industrial safety practices and lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Ability to read gauges, meters, blueprints, and equipment manuals.
  • Basic computer skills for recordkeeping and maintenance reporting.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical or vocational training in mechanical, industrial, or power plant operations.
  • Experience with computerized control systems, PLCs, or DCS systems.
  • Knowledge of natural gas, fuel oil, biomass, or coal-fired boiler systems.
  • Experience in manufacturing environments such as chemical, food processing, paper, textile, or flooring production facilities.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and work platforms.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in hot, noisy, and industrial environments.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs as required.
